If your electrician is about to begin rough-in and the lighting still feels unresolved, you are not alone.

Homeowners often contact us at this exact stage. They may have a floor plan, an architect’s basic lighting layout, or a few fixtures selected by an interior designer, but nobody has coordinated the entire lighting system yet.

That coordination matters because electrical rough-in is when wiring, junction boxes, recessed housings, control wiring, and many other components hidden behind the walls and ceilings are installed. Once drywall and finished ceilings go up, changes become slower, messier, and more expensive.

At this point, lighting is not mainly about choosing attractive fixtures. It is about making seven decisions that allow the electrician, designer, lighting supplier, and controls contractor to build the same plan.

The short checklist

Before rough-in, confirm:

  1. Which plans and project details everyone is using

  2. What each room will contain and how it will be used

  3. Which lighting layers and control zones each space needs

  4. Which recessed lighting system fits the ceiling and the project

  5. The color temperature and color quality of the light

  6. How the fixtures, drivers, dimmers, and controls will work together

  7. Which products must be selected and ordered now

Here is what each decision involves.

1. Gather more than the floor plan

A floor plan is a useful beginning, but it rarely contains enough information to finish a good lighting plan.

We first ask whether the project has a reflected ceiling plan, usually called an RCP. This drawing shows ceiling features and the intended locations of recessed lights, pendants, sconces, coves, ceiling fans, and other fixtures.

Depending on the project, we may also review:

  • The architectural and electrical plans

  • The lighting fixture schedule

  • Furniture plans

  • Interior elevations

  • Kitchen and millwork drawings

  • Ceiling heights and details

  • Soffit and cove details

  • Important art or feature wall locations

  • The lighting control or audiovisual plan

  • Exterior elevations and landscape plans

These documents answer different questions. A furniture plan tells us where people will sit and work. An interior elevation shows cabinetry, mirrors, artwork, and wall details. A ceiling plan shows where fixtures can be placed, but not always what they should illuminate.

Someone also needs to own the final lighting decisions. Clarify what the architect, interior designer, electrician, lighting specialist, and controls contractor are each responsible for. Otherwise, every party may assume somebody else checked the complete system.

If your project does not have a formal RCP or fixture schedule, do not wait for perfect drawings. A marked-up floor plan or even a clear hand sketch can be enough to begin the conversation.

2. Lay out the lighting around the room (not a ceiling grid)

An evenly spaced grid of recessed lights can look orderly on a drawing and still perform poorly in the finished home.

Lighting placement should respond to:

  • Furniture and how people will move through the room

  • Countertops and other work surfaces

  • Art, textured walls, fireplaces, and architectural features

  • Cabinetry, shelving, and millwork

  • Dining tables, kitchen islands, and seating groups

  • Sightlines and likely glare

  • Ceiling details, beams, fans, air-conditioning grilles, and sprinklers

For example, a dining fixture should relate to the table, not simply the mathematical center of the room. Kitchen lighting should illuminate counters and work areas without leaving the person preparing food in shadow. Adjustable accents should aim at art or architectural features rather than arbitrary spots on the floor.

A reflected ceiling plan is viewed from above. People experience the finished room from eye level. The layout has to work from both perspectives.

3. Plan layers of light and control them separately

Recessed downlights are useful, but they should not be asked to do every job. A ceiling filled with downlights can begin to look like Swiss cheese, while the light itself can feel like a collection of flashlights pointed toward the floor.

A more comfortable room normally combines several kinds of light:

  • Ambient light provides soft, general fill and can come from coves, indirect lighting, or light reflected from walls and ceilings.

  • Task light helps with activities such as preparing food, reading, working, grooming, or cleaning.

  • Accent light highlights art, materials, landscaping, or architectural features and gives the room depth.

  • Decorative light adds visual character through pendants, chandeliers, and sconces.

Not every room needs all four layers. Most important spaces, however, benefit from more than one.

The layers should also be placed on sensible, separate control zones. Recessed lights, cove lighting, wall sconces, under-cabinet lighting, and decorative fixtures should not automatically be placed on one switch or dimmer. Separate zones let the homeowner balance the room for cooking, working, relaxing, entertaining, or cleaning.

The exact scenes can be programmed later. The circuits, wiring, and zones that make those scenes possible must be planned now.

4. Select the recessed lighting system before the ceiling closes

Recessed lighting is often the most time sensitive fixture decision because the housing or rough-in component may need to be installed before drywall.

The project team should confirm:

  • Housing based or low profile/slim/wafer style construction

  • Aperture size

  • Trimless (flangeless) or trimmed (flanged) appearance

  • Round or square trim

  • Fixed or adjustable light

  • Light output and beam spread

  • Ceiling depth and thickness

  • Joist, truss, duct, and insulation conflicts

  • Access from above

  • Required safety, location, and construction ratings

The architect and licensed electrician should verify the ratings required for the actual ceiling and local code. Depending on the condition, these may include IC (insulation contact), airtight, wet or damp location, fire rated, or other project specific requirements. These are not cosmetic upgrades. The wrong housing can fail inspection or force the team to reopen a finished ceiling.

Trimless recessed lighting needs especially early coordination because its frame is finished into the ceiling. Changing the system later can involve new fixtures, drywall repair, and refinishing.

Low profile wafer fixtures can solve shallow clearance and budget problems, but they are not automatically the best long-term choice for every custom home. With some low cost product lines, future availability, serviceability, and color consistency between replacement batches can be concerns. If a highly integrated fixture is being used throughout the house, ask how it will be serviced and whether buying a few matching spares makes sense.

5. Choose color temperature (and look beyond the Kelvin number)

For high-end residential interiors, 2700K and 3000K are common starting points. Warmer light generally feels more relaxed in the evening, while cooler light can feel more energetic. Personal preference, daylight, materials, finishes, and the way each room is used should all influence the decision.

Color temperature is not the same as color quality. Two fixtures labeled 2700K can make wood, stone, fabric, artwork, food, and skin tones look noticeably different. Review color-rendering information, but do not rely on a single number when the appearance is important. Whenever possible, test an actual sample against the project’s finishes.

This is also the time to choose among:

  • Fixed color light, which maintains one color temperature as it dims

  • Warm dim light, which becomes warmer as the light level is lowered, similar to the feeling of dimmed incandescent or halogen light

  • Tunable white light, which allows a broader range of color temperatures but requires compatible fixtures and controls

Warm dim can be especially effective in living rooms, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, and other spaces where the goal shifts from functional light to a softer evening atmosphere.

Do not casually mix color temperatures within the same view. If a deliberate mix is desired, review it with samples rather than hoping that labels from different manufacturers will match.

6. Treat the fixtures, drivers, dimmers, and controls as one system

A fixture marked “dimmable” does not mean it will work properly with every dimmer.

The fixture or LED driver and the control must use compatible dimming methods. Depending on the product and project, that could involve phase-control dimming, 0–10V control, a digital system, or a manufacturer specific solution.

Confirm:

  • The dimming method for every fixture and driver

  • The intended lowest light level

  • Whether the light dims smoothly without flicker, shimmer, dropout, or an abrupt jump

  • Whether additional control wiring is required

  • Where remote drivers and transformers will be located

  • How those components will remain accessible for service

  • Whether an audiovisual or lighting controls contractor is involved

  • Who is responsible for approving compatibility

The desired low end matters. A fixture that only dims to a relatively high level may still feel too bright for evening use, even though it is technically dimming.

A real project lesson

On one condominium/lobby project, the owner wanted dimming after the fixtures had already been installed. Fortunately, the fixtures had compatible 0–10V drivers, so a solution was possible. But the electrician still had to reach a high ceiling and add the necessary control wiring between fixtures. Wireless controls helped complete the system, but they did not eliminate all of the added labor.

If the drivers had not supported the needed dimming method, the available fixes would have been far more limited.

The lesson is simple: decide how the lights should behave before rough-in, then have the lighting and controls teams confirm the complete system before fixtures are ordered.

7. Match product selections to the construction schedule

High-end lighting lead times can range from readily available stock to several months. Availability can also change between the day a fixture is specified and the day it is ordered.

If the electrician will begin soon, prioritize the products needed inside the walls and ceilings:

  • Recessed housings and rough-in frames

  • Junction-box requirements and mounting locations

  • Linear lighting channels or details built into coves and millwork

  • Remote drivers and transformers

  • Control wiring and control hardware

  • Any required structural support for heavy decorative fixtures

Create a basic fixture schedule that identifies the manufacturer, model, finish, color temperature, output, dimming method, driver, required rating, quantity, and current lead time. It does not need to be elaborate. It needs to prevent different team members from ordering or installing incompatible parts.

When the ideal product will not arrive in time, there may be an in-stock alternative with a similar appearance and performance. That substitution should be reviewed before the rough-in component is installed, not discovered after the ceiling is finished.

What can safely wait until later?

Not every aesthetic decision must be complete before rough-in.

These items can often be finalized later:

  • The exact dimming scenes and light levels used for daily life

  • Final aiming and focusing of adjustable fixtures

  • Portable floor and table lamps

  • Final landscape light aiming

  • Some decorative fixture selections

Decorative fixtures can wait only when the electrical location, switching, voltage, junction box, structural support, expected fixture dimensions, canopy, and mounting conditions have already been confirmed. A large chandelier or unusually sized sconce can change the rough-in requirements, so “we will pick it later” is not always safe.

What should you send if you want help?

Send whatever you currently have. Useful information includes:

  • Floor plans

  • Reflected ceiling plans

  • Electrical plans

  • Fixture schedules

  • Furniture plans and interior elevations

  • Ceiling, cove, cabinetry, or millwork details

  • Project location

  • Current construction stage and target dates

  • Approximate lighting budget

  • Style, trim, color temperature, or control preferences

Plan the parts you will not be able to see

The visible fixtures get most of the attention, but the hidden decisions made before rough-in determine whether the finished lighting will look good, dim properly, pass inspection, and remain serviceable.

The goal is not to make every selection months earlier than necessary. It is to lock the decisions that become difficult to change once the walls and ceilings close.
